Extractions in Kansas City

Here are some important guidelines following a tooth extraction:

  • Avoid chewing until anesthetic numbness has worn off.

  • Keep biting pressure on cotton gauze until bleeding has stopped. This will usually be within the first 1-2 hours after your visit.  Change gauze when it becomes saturated.

  • If bleeding persists beyond this time, you may try biting on a moist tea bag.  Tea has natural blood coagulants and can help stop bleeding.

  • In the unlikely event that bleeding remains uncontrolled, please call our office immediately at 816-221-8686.

  • Avoid smoking, vaping and other tobacco products.

  • Do not drink through a straw.

  • Avoid chewing gum.

  • Avoid hot and cold extremes in food and drink.

  • Continue eating normally, but avoid hard or crunchy foods.

  • Take ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed.
